Gregory’s ‘tone’ concerns GOPer

Dear Editor:

My family has been Republican since the Party was founded. I am a life-long conservative Republican. My son is a corporate lawyer for a major oil company.

I am concerned about the tone of the articles written by your columnist, Mr. Mike Gregory. He has made unverifiable statements about tax policy, and he did so with dogmatic certitude. Recently, he wrote that people who are concerned about the environment of our planet are "Marxist" and want to "destroy the American economy."

I grew up in Indiana farm country. My relatives and their neighbors just lost their crops because of torrential rainfall that exceeded any rainfall amount recorded during the 116 years that records have been kept. I assure you that those people are concerned about the environment, and they are not "Marxist," and they do not want to "destroy the American economy."

I believe that corporations cannot be taxed, effectively, and probably should not be taxed. But that is only an opinion. The effect of some tax policies cannot be tested scientifically, because of the many uncontrollable variables and, therefore, cannot be proved. A statement about the result of corporate tax that is expressed with dogmatic certitude and without proof is a form of arrogance and surely not a Christian behavior.

If you were to tell me that Mr. Gregory is merely expressing his personal opinion, I would find that somewhat unbelievable because of the prominent space his column enjoys in your newspaper. In my opinion, Mr. Gregory's tone does not persuade; it offends.

I respectfully request that you consider the issue I raise. Is it the best way to inform your readers?

Sincerely,

Jack Stevenson
