Lack of Coverage Disappointing

Dear Editor,

I am writing in regard to the recent Fall Sports Spectacular article in The McCreary County Record.

As a parent of three cheerleaders, I always look forward to seeing if there are any pictures of the cheerleaders in the sports segment.

This particular issue had the headline “Fall Sport Spectacular” and I was excited because I knew our cheerleaders would have their picture in the paper. But to my dismay, they did not. For two of the sports events represented in the article, my daughter, along with 13 other girls, was cheering at those particular games.

Unfortunately, no pictures of the cheerleaders were included.

Have we forgotten that cheerleading is recognized as a sport?

I realize that some of you may think cheerleading is not very important, but these girls and guys who participate practice five to six days a week memorizing dance routines, chants and motions. They are told the harder they work, the harder they tumble (learning round off backhand springs, tucks, whips, layouts), the stronger they become, may provide them a better opportunity to be chosen for college scholarships.

When their sport is not recognized in their local paper, they ask us parents, “Why aren’t there pictures of the cheerleaders included in the paper?”

I do not have an answer for them.

I am not against any sport ... I just believe coverage of these events should include pictures of all teams which are present.

I believe all children are important; all sports are important; and all school activities are important. Please recognize this and offer more coverage of all sporting events.

Thank you,

Sherry Ball
