SOMERSET — A man with McCreary County ties was arrested Monday on drug charges after trying to steal a cash register from the Somerset Kmart.
Kyle Cordell, 20, who lives in Somerset, was charged with possession of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; and first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense.
According to Somerset Police Lt. Allan Coomer, 911 received a call from Kmart that an individual had cut the cords to a cash register and was attempting to steal it. As SPD officers converged on the scene, Cordell fled on foot.
“Officers began a search of the area, locating the sub-ject on GE Drive,” Coomer said.
Somerset Police Officer Eric Klepper checked Cordell for weapons. Cordell then told Klepper he had drug paraphernalia in his pocket.
Cordell was transported back to Kmart, where a search of his ve-hicle revealed “a small amount” of marijuana, according to Coomer. Also found in Cordell’s truck were items believed to have been stolen in recent vehicle thefts, including a credit card that had been used fraudulently at JC Penney’s.
Cordell was lodged at the Pulaski County Detention Center.
Coomer said additional charges are expected to be filed against Cordell.
