Board revises school calendar

Classes to begin August 18 and end on June 1

Record Staff Report

STEARNS — With a relatively light agenda, the McCreary County Board of Education met Thursday for approximately 45 minutes.

The bulk of that time was devoted to an annual report from McCreary Central High School Principal Donna Caldwell.

The school is preparing to undergo a major renovation that includes the instruction of a new wing. In January the school board had approved the calendar for the upcoming school year with a later opening day in part due to the construction schedule and in part due to August’s high temperatures. The board had to revise that calendar last week due to the General Assembly re-instating legislation which requires more instructional days.

According to Director of Pupil Personnel Schyler Jones, HB 380 requires two more days than was in the 2005-06 calendar — a total of 177 for McCreary County. The revised calendar calls for Opening Day to begin August 18 and Closing Day on June 1.
