Tucker tabbed to fill void

Newest school board member sworn in

By JANIE SLAVEN
Record Staff Writer

STEARNS — The McCreary County Board of Education is once again whole with last week's appointment of Michele Tucker as the District 4 representative, replacing Rebecca Gregory who resigned in April after moving to northern Kentucky.

Superintendent Arthur D. Wright received official notification from Kentucky Department of Education Commissioner Jon Draud last Tuesday, less than a week after three applicants were interviewed for the position.

Tucker and her sons — Devon, 19; Jordan, 15; and Brogan, 5 — came to McCreary County four years ago from Denver, CO. In addition to her duties as Editor & Publisher’s Midwest/Western Regional Sales Manager, she recently opened Andiamo Pizzeria on Main Street in Whitley City.

Civically Tucker chairs the McCreary County Community Housing Development Board of Directors and serves with Partners in Tourism, McCreary County Chamber of Commerce and Somerset Rotary Club.

Tucker’s appointment is effective through November, when voters in Division 4 will select a new board member to complete Gregory’s term, which is through December 31, 2010.

Tucker hasn’t come to a final decision about whether she will run for the seat, telling The Record that she wants to be sure that she can do the job justice.

“Although some may see this as a minor political position, I look at it as a huge responsibility,” Tucker said. “To help mold thousands of students’ educational backgrounds and options should not be a responsibility that is taken lightly. Our children deserve only the best.”
