Memorial site ground broken

Project honors old MHS

WHITLEY CITY — The committee to establish a memorial for the former McCreary County High School has a design and plans to begin construction in about a week. But donations are still needed to complete the project.

Committee members broke ground last Wednesday on the campus now occupied by the Lord’s Gym. Organizers plan to construct a memorial modeled after the informational kiosk at Natural Arch.

“I loved that structure when I saw it,” organizer Jack Koger said. “It’s a permanent structure but more usable than a traditional monument.”

Koger explained that alumni would be able to display photographs and other mementos from the school, which had to be torn down after a catastrophic fire.

The committee has received a $3,800 estimate for materials and labor but has thus far raised only $1,400. Costs may be reduced with donated materials. Koger said the committee would build until funds run out but added that he expects more donations to come in.

“A lot of people were waiting until we had facts and figures,” he said.
