31 candidates file for ’10 races

Some of next year’s McCreary races could be hot

WHITLEY CITY — They were standing in line as the McCreary County Courthouse opened its doors last Wednesday morning.

November 4 was the first official day to file for candidacy in the following offices: County Judge/Executive, County Attorney, County Clerk, Property Valuation Administrator, Sheriff, Jailer, Coroner, Magistrate/Justice of the Peace, Constable, Surveyor, Board of Education, and Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors.

By the time the McCreary County Clerk’s Office closed at 4:30 p.m., some 18 candidates were running toward their party’s nomination in the May 18 primary.

At press time on Monday afternoon, the total number of local candidates had increased to 31:

County Clerk: Eric Haynes (R), William Kilby (R), and David W. Tucker (R)

Jailer: Harold Hansford (R), Jessie Hatfield (R), James L. “Big Jim” Stephens (R) and Frank Gowin (R)

Judge-Executive: Scottie Morrow (R), Douglas Stephens (R), Scott Duncan (R), Tony Kidd (D), Vicki Kidd (R) and Gabriel Jones (D)

District 3 Constable: Donald Daugherty (R)

District 1 Constable: Jamie Higginbotham (R)

Coroner: Roy Hale (R)

Sheriff: Randy Waters (D)

District 1 Magistrate: Earl Brooks (R), William Mike Jones (R), Stanley Cox (R), Teddy Coffey (D)

District 3 Magistrate: Ralph Murphy (D), Jason L. Mann (R)

County Attorney: Michele Wilson Jones (D)

PVA: Bruce W. Lominac (R) and Florence King (R)

District 2 Magistrate: Roger Phillips (R)

District 4 Magistrate: Jeff Spradlin (R) and Duston Baird (R)

District 4 Constable: David Kilby (R)

District 2 Constable: Brad Waters (R)

McCreary County Clerk Eric Haynes has launched a website that not only includes printable forms citizens can submit (motor vehicle, vital statistics, etc.) but also updates on candidate filings and voter information. Though still under construction, the website can now be viewed at

www.mccrearycountyclerk.com.

Candidates for regional and state offices must file with the Secretary of State in Frankfort. At press time, the following candidates were listed online:

• Monticello attorney Sara Beth Gregory has filed to run as a Republican for the office of State Representative in the 52nd House District.

• Daniel J. Venters has filed for Justice of the Supreme Court, District 3, which includes McCreary County.
