Lady Raiders Win 2 of 3 to Finish as KY/TN Border Battle Runner Up

STEARNS —   After a ten day stretch without a game the Lady Raider softball team got back to work over the weekend hosting the Kentucky / Tennessee Border Battle on Friday and Saturday.

McCreary opened up play in the event on Friday afternoon against Scott TN who they had narrowly beaten 7-6 in late March.

Friday’s contest ended with a 10-4 Lady Raider win but the contest was closely contested through the early innings.

The score was tied 3-3 in the fourth when McCreary first baseman Haley Jones lined softly into centerfield with the bases loaded.  The Lady Highlander fielder attempted to make a shoestring catch but the ball landed just out of her reach and then bounced over her glove allowing two runs to score.  A third run would come in when the ball got away on the return throw to the infield.

Following the Lady Raiders game three more games were played which involved some controversial calls, extra innings and a couple of delays for lightning.  The scheduled four games were finally completed sometime after 1 AM on Saturday followed by the second round of the event getting underway at 9 AM on Saturday.

McCreary would benefit from playing the early Friday game and then not playing until the third game on Saturday where they would face Coalfield TN who had defeated Pulaski County 6-2 in the second game Friday.

McCreary would take a 1-0 lead in the first  as Cierra Terry scored on a error by the second baseman.

Wit a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, which due to time limits in effect for the tournament would be the last inning, McCreary would get three much needed insurance runs on a bases loaded walk followed by back to back hit batters to make it 5-0.

Coalfield would open tho bottom of the inning with a single that got by the left fielder and then a line drive double into the gap in left center to score a run.  Another hit would score the second run and a third run would come in on ground ball outs.  With a runner on second and the potential tying run at the plate McCreary ended the game getting a ground ball out to Megan Maxwell at third base to advance to the championship.

In Saturday’s final game McCreary faced Russell County who had defeated Casey County 9-3 on Friday and then narrowly got by Louisville Southern 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Lakers would push two runs across in the first inning but McCreary would come back with a single up the middle off the bat of Megan Maxwell to score Alexandria West to make it 2-1.

Russell would add another run in the second but a pair of lady Raider defensive plays prevented a couple more.  Cierra Terry threw from short right field  home to Reagan Kidd who tagged out a  runner at the plate.  Haley Jones also cut down a runner at the plate after fielding a two hopper at first and throwing home for the force out.

With Russell up 3-1 McCreary would flex some muscle.  Haley Jones launched a drive to right center field that easily cleared the fence for a solo home run making it 3-2.  Singles by Cyndol Kiser and Courtney Dixon put runners on base for Cierra Terry who smashed a hard drive to left field that also cleared the fence to give McCreary a 5-3 lead.

The lead would not hold up however as Russell  rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth  and added two more runs in the seventh to make it 9-5 with the Lady Raiders coming to the plate for the final time.

McCreary would only be able to get one runner on base in the seventh before the side was retired and Russell County claimed the championship trophy.
