Lady Raiders Win Twice on Road Before Falling to SW

STEARNS —   The Lady Raider fastpitch team won two of three games last week to improve to 12-6 on the season.  They beat Whitley County 5-1 on Monday and followed that with a 5-0 shutout of Clinton County on Tuesday with both games on the road.

On Wednesday they were finally able to complete their regular season district scheduled hosting Southwestern in what would turn out to be a 9-0 loss.

After losing to the Lady Warriors 11-0 on April 24 in a game typical starting pitcher Kaylee Cotton wasn’t available to pitch McCreary would have had to beat Southwestern by twelve runs to claim the number one seed in next weeks district tournament.

McCreary opted to again to keep Cotton off the mound last week against the Lady Warriors and thus preventing them from becoming more familiar with her than they already might be.  Since first taking the mound for the Lady Raiders as a seventh grader in 2011 Cotton has faced Southwestern eight times with each team claiming four victories.  The Lady Warriors have averaged 4.9 runs per game against Cotton.  Should McCreary advance to the championship game it will be three days short of one year since Southwestern last faced her.

To get to that point though McCreary must first advance past Wayne County in the opening round of the district tournament on Monday.

The Lady Raiders have now won seven straight over the Lady Cardinals but both of this season’s games have been close with McCreary winning 6-1 and 6-2 after adding a couple of insurance runs late in each case.

Due to the consolidation of Monticello leaving the 48th District with just three teams the number one seeded team (Southwestern) will get a bye into the championship game as well as the automatic berth into the 12th Regional tournament that goes to the winner and runner-up of the district tourney.
