Raiders Pick Up 10th Win Before Sr Night Wash Out

STEARNS —     In the final week of the regular season the McCreary Central baseball squad was able to notch one final win on what would turn out to be the last opportunity to do so with rain taking away Friday’s scheduled regular season finale.

The win would come on the road Thursday at Clinton County but only after an 11-1 loss at home to South Laurel on Monday and a 7-3 home loss to Knox Central on Tuesday.

Monday’s contest against South Laurel looked like a disaster in the making early on with three Raider errors and a wild pitch leading to a pair of Cardinals runs in the top of the first but the Raiders would settle down and keep the game within reach until the final innings.

The Raiders would get a run back in the bottom of the first on an rbi single by Cole Kidd that scored Devin Rose from third with two outs.  Rose had reached with a one out walk and then moved up a base when Brad Strunk also drew a bases on balls.  Strunk would get forced out at second on a ground ball to second base by Jake Kennedy that enabled Rose to get to third.

Rose’s run made the score 3-1 cut the lead to 2-1.  South would add another run in the top of the second and the score would remain 3-1 until the fourth when the Cardinals were able to open up the lead with a three run inning.

McCreary was nearly out of the inning with two outs and a runner on first but a walk followed by a triple scored two runs before a double scored the third to make the score 6-1.

McCreary would threaten only once after the first inning.  That was in the bottom of the second when a walk and two singles loaded the bases but the Raiders were not able to come up with a clutch two out hit.

After the second inning they would collect just one hit, a two out Jake Kennedy single in the fifth, to go along with one walk in each of the fourth and sixth innings.

McCreary avoided trouble in the fifth as three batters reached base.  Rose would throw out one of those runners trying to steal second to help the Raiders keep the deficit at 6-1.

South Laurel would pull away starting in the sixth when they scored three times followed by two more runners crossing the plate in the top of the seventh.

The sixth inning scoring got underway with a home run to left center field by Daniel Neal who had tripled in the fourth and then doubled in the seventh finishing the game just a single short of hitting for the cycle.

McCreary would host Knox Central on Tuesday in what would become the final home game for seniors Brad Strunk and Andrew Wells when rain washed away Friday’s scheduled senior night contest against Lincoln County.

The game would end up being a 7-3 loss to the Panthers as Knox scored in each of the first five innings.   McCreary had numerous chances to do more damage but they would strand a runner at third base in four of the first six innings as well as have a runner throw out at both home and third.

After Knox scored one in the opening frame and then two more in the top of the second McCreary was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second.

Devin Rose and Cole Kidd opened the inning with back to back singles and an out later Tyler Vaughn singled to drive in Rose to make it 3-1 in favor of the Panthers.

Both teams would add a single run in each of thier next two times at bat.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the third McCreary would get a two out single from Rose to score Andrew Wells who had opened the inning with a single.  Wells had moved up to second on a two out walk to Jake Kennedy who was throw out at third to end the inning trying to advance an extra base on Rose’s single.

After Knox again scored to make it 5-2 in the fourth but McCreary would also add a run to make it 5-3.

Ethan Stephens reached base on an error to start off the inning and Tyler Vaughn would follow with a single.  With runners on second and third following a passed ball Kyle Jones singled to score Stephens but Vaughn would be cut down at the plate trying to score from second on the play.

The Panthers added two more runs in the top of the fifth making the score 7-3 and then they avoided a Raider scoring threat after McCreary loaded the bases with one out.  Alex West doubled to start the inning followed by a walk to Brad Strunk.  Both runners moved up on a ground ball to shortstop for the first out and then Rose reached on an error by the pitcher to load the bases.  Back to back strikeouts would end the promising threat however and McCreary would only get two hits over the final two innings.

McCreary collected twelve hits with three of them by Andrew Wells in his final game on the McCreary Central field.   Devin Rose, Tyler Vaughn and Cole Kidd would all finish with two hits each.

The Raiders would wrap up regular season play on Thursday with a 5-1 win at Clinton County behind another tremendous pitching effort from senior Brad Strunk.

Strunk would allow just three hits and two walks in seven innings while racking up 15 strikeouts.  He would also double and score twice in the win.  It would be his sixth double digit strikeout game of the season and fifth in his last six outings.  For the season Strunk has struck out 122 batters in 69 innings while giving up just 37 hits and issuing 22 walks.  His season earned run average is 1.22 per seven innings pitched.

McCreary would score two runs in each of the first two innings despite collecting just three hits for the game.  Clinton County would get thier only run in the bottom of the first.  With a 4-1 lead the Raiders would add one more to make it 5-1 in the top of the seventh.

The win was the tenth of the season for the Raiders after recording just seven wins a season ago.
