Raiders Can’t Find Enough Offense to Knock Off Cards

STEARNS — The McCreary Central baseball team saw their season come to a close last Monday with a 5-1 loss to Wayne County in the opening round of the 48th District Tournament.

The Raiders had lost both meetings with the Cardinals in the regular season by scores of 10-0 and 14-0. Raider senior Brad Strunk, who did not pitch in either of the previous contests took the hill for McCreary and pitched well enough to give the Raiders a chance to pull off the upset.  The lefthanded throwing Strunk gave up seven hits, walked one and hit one batter while striking out seven in his six innings of work.

Fielding woes by the Raiders would play a significant role as they played a part in at least four of the Wayne County runs.

The Raider offense also struggled to come up with a timely hit.  Central was limited to just three hits in the contest but they were also the recipient of six free passes and would end up stranding nine base runners in the game.

McCreary threatened in the top of the first when Strunk and Jake Kennedy drew two out walks followed by a single from Devin Rose to load the bases.  Those runners would end up still on the bases though  when the inning ended with a strikeout.

Wayne jumped on top scoring twice in the bottom of the first.  Back to back one out singles preceded an error that allowed one run to score.  A third single in the inning would follow to score the second run.  Wayne would end up leaving the bases loaded like McCreary when Strunk got his first strikeout of the game to end the inning.

In the third McCreary again would come up with a great scoring opportunity.  Strunk, Kennedy and Rose all drew one out walks to load the bases prompting a pitching change for the Cardinals.  A strikeout for out two left it up to Cole Kidd who flared a very soft pop up along the third base line.  The Wayne County pitcher had the ball glance off his glove just inside the third base line and bounce into foul territory allowing the runners to move up a base with Strunk crossing the plate for the Raiders only run of the game.  A strikeout followed,  once again end the inning with the bases full.

In the bottom of the fourth Wayne would take advantage of Raider miscues to score two more runs.  After back to back strikeouts to start the inning a single, an error and another single loaded the bases.  A wild pitch allowed one run to score and when the throw from the backstop to Strunk covering the plate got away, the hustling Cardinal runner from second base continued without stopping around third and slid safely home to make the score 4-1.

After leaving three runners stranded in the third McCreary would see only two more runners reach base.  Senior Andrew Wells led off the fourth with a single to right field and Strunk would draw a two out walk in the seventh and final frame.

Wayne would plate one final run in the top of the sixth after the leadoff hitter reached via error.  He would end up stealing second and move up to third on a balk before scoring on a ground out to shortstop to make it 5-1.

The Raiders would end the season  with a 10-24 record with wins coming  over Wartburg Central 3-1, Lynn Camp 13-1, Oneida 5-0, Berea 4-3, Jackson County 2-0, twice over Clinton County 4-1 and 5-1 and three times over Williamsburg 3-1, 6-5 and 9-3.

Wayne County would fall in the district championship game 6-2 to Southwestern the following night.
