Raiders Pick Up 5th Win Behind Strunk’s 18 K Performance

WILLIAMSBURG —   After a series of lopsided losses since winning thier fourth game of the season with a 4-1 win over Clinton County on April 11 the Raiders rode the left arm of senior Brad Strunk to claim thier fifth win Friday at Williamsburg.

The senior lefty allowed three hits, one walk and hit two batters  while striking out 18 of the 31 batters he faced as the Raiders edged Williamsburg 6-5.

Three first inning errors and a walk led to a three run first inning for the Jackets.  After striking out the leadoff hitter  Strunk would end the inning with the first of what would be seven consecutive punch outs.

Williamsburg threatened in the fifth inning when the first two batters reached with a single and a hit by pitch.  Strunk would need just ten more pitches however to put an end to the threat as he struck out the top three hitters in the order to preserve the Raider 5-3 lead.

The Raiders had gotten most of thier offensive production with two outs in the second inning.  With one out Chase Terry and Justin  Trammell drew back to back walks and then an out later Ethan Stephens and Devin Rose worked consecutive walks  to force Terry home from third and leave the bases loaded for leadoff hitter Strunk.  The Raider senior would come through at the plate as well as he singled home Trammell and Stephens to tie the game at 3-3.

The inning would continue with an Alex West single to reload the bases for Jake Kennedy who singled to drive in Rose to make it 4-3.

McCreary would pick up another run in the top of the third after Trammell reached with a one out walk which eventually led to him scoring on an error at first base making the score 5-3.

McCreary would add one more run that would prove to be the game winner in the top of the sixth after a one out single by Rose, a stolen base and two wild pitches

Williamsburg would collect two of thier three hits in the bottom of the sixth sandwiched around another strikeout.  After getting the second out of the inning on strikes back to back Raider errors allowed the first two base runners to score cutting the Raider lead to 6-5 with runners still on second and third.  Strunk would again employ his best defense by not allowing the Jackets to put the ball in play as he struck out Williamsburg’s leadoff hitter for the fourth time in the game.

In the bottom of the seventh Williamsburg got the potential game tying run on first base with a walk but Strunk finished off the game by striking out the next  three hitters to bring his game total to 18 and give the Raiders thier fifth win of the season.

Prior to Friday’s win McCreary had suffered  five straight losses with four of them being of the run rule variety.

In other games last week the Raiders lost 13-2 to North Laurel on Monday, 10-0 at Wayne County on Wednesday and 13-1 to Whitley County on Thursday.
