Lady Raiders Struggling with Weather and Attrition

STEARNS —    After playing three games in two days over the weekend of April 11-12 the Lady Raiders found themselves waiting nearly a week before getting back on the field due to a variety of reasons.

On Monday the scheduled game with Whitley County was cancelled because they Lady Colonels had to make up a district game against South Laurel.

On Tuesday McCreary had a district game of their own lost due to the near inch of snow that fell in the afternoon.

Thursday it was Oneida that was in need of a district make up game so a third game in four days was called off.

Finally on Friday the scheduled game at home against Cumberland County was indeed played.  Unfortunately for the Lady Raiders however a series of unforseen circumstances forced them to play with somewhat of a make shift lineup with numerous changes to both the  offense and defensive lineups.

Three starters would not play in the game due to various reasons which forced enough changes to the defensive alignment that for most of the contest only three of the nine  players on the field were playing in thier normal position.  Only catcher Reagan Kidd, first baseman Haley Jones and third baseman Megan Maxwell were manning the position they normally do.

Usual second baseman Cierra Terry moved out to left field for Cortney Dixon who moved to centerfield.  Norman centerfielder Megan Ross had to take over in the pitching circle.

Freshman Kayli West made her first varsity start at shortstop, Makayla Chestnut manned second base and  Emily Simpson played right field.

Not surprisingly things did not go well for the Lady Raiders who suffered thier first loss of the season, 7-0 to the Lady Panthers on March 21.

After Cumberland  put five runs on the board in the top of the first inning the Lady Raiders would manage to get one back in the bottom but then leave the bases loaded.

Terry led off with a single and Megan Ross followed with a single.  Both runners would move up a base on a double steal and Terry would then score on a wild pitch while Megan Maxwell drew a walk.  Haley Jones followed with a walk to load the bases with no one out but the Lady Panther pitcher would settle down and record three straight strikeouts to leave the bases loaded.

Cumberland added one run in the second and then broke out for a five run third to make the score 11-1.

With a 12-1 deficit McCreary was only able to push across one more run as Kayli West walked and stole second before scoring on a single by Cierra Terry in the bottom of the fourth.

McCreary needed one run in the last of the fifth to avoid a run rule loss but a leadoff walk to Maxwell was all they could get and the Lady Panthers claimed a 12-2 win to drop McCreary to 6-4.
