Mother Nature showed her ugly side Saturday morning as far as the Little Leaguers were concerned, raining out McCreary County’s opening Day festivities.
While the day was called off, it was only temporary as the teams took the field Monday night to officially open the 2008 Little League season.
There are several teams in all age groups this season, ranging from the smallest (Wee Ball) all the way up to the pre-teens (11 and 12-year-old Little Leaguers and the girls softball teams).
Thanks to a generous donation from the McCreary County Park Board, which gave $12,000 to the Little League, all teams were uniformed with shirts and caps free of charge and without the demand for sponsors as in the past. It also allowed children to play without the parents having to pay the league fees.
The games will mostly be played at the Somerset Community College’s McCreary Center Campus again this season, which will likely be the last since construction is expected to do away with the baseball fields after this year.
Park officials hope to resume of the new park site later this summer.
