The Lady Raiders were winners of three of their last four games heading into Monday night, and on the heels of a rematch with the district’s best team on Tuesday.
After beating oneida last week the Lady Raiders traveled to Southwestern to play a Lady Warriors team that had won 20 consecutive district games. What was scheduled as a double-header wound up being one rain delayed game that saw Southwestern earn a 7-0 decision in a game where the Lady Raiders were limited to a single hit off the bat of Ashley Payne. Taniesha Vanover pitched a well of a game, striking out six batters while giving up four earned runs over seven innings in the loss.
The second game was rescheduled for tonight (Tuesday) at McCreary Central.
Following the loss to Southwestern, the Lady Raiders dusted themselves off and picked up wins in their next two games, beating Knox Central 10-8 and then district rival Monticello 4-2 on Thursday.
The victory over Monticello gives the Lady Raiders a sweep over the Lady Trojans who are winless in district play and will have to face Southwestern in the first round of the district tournament.
With the Lady Raiders wins over Monticello, coupled with a split against Wayne County, McCreary Central will face the Lady Cardinals in the first round of the district tournament.
A second win over the Lady Cardinals would vault the Lady Raiders into the 12th Region tournament where the team now stands among the middle of the pack with an overall record of 8-11 with 10 games remaining.
The team has seemed to find its groove of late, and just in time to make a run before post season play begins. In addition to winning three of their last four games, the Lady Raiders have taken five of their last seven games following a tough six game losing streak.
Following Tuesday night’s game against Southwestern, the Lady Raiders will play host to Rockcastle County on Thursday night before playing in the East Jessamine Invitational Tournament next weekend.
