High school football team hits the practice field this week

By DON PERRY
Record Sports Writer

The Raiders high school football team will join others throughout the state on the hot practice fields beginning this week.

Coach Clinton Gay wants anyone interested in playing for the team this season to be at the field house by 10 a.m. on Friday, July 25. If a player doesn’t have a complete KHSAA physical he can get one done at that time for $10, and then it will be off to the practice fields for the first time since last fall when the squad played in the first post season game in the program’s history.

Gay hopes to take that success and the overall 3-8 record another step this season and will try to do so with six returning starters on each side of the ball, including the district player of the year in Aaron Watts who returns for his junior campaign. In addition to being the Raiders best offensive weapon (more than 1,00 yards rushing and 360 receiving), he also anchors what is expected to be a strong defensive backfield.

After three weeks of practices, the Raiders will play a scrimmage at Lynn Camp High School onAug. 15, and then open their regular season by hosting Clinton County on Aug. 29. They will play district rivals Rockcastle and Knox counties at home, while traveling to Bell County and Madison Southern.
