Lady Raiders fall at Wayne, Garrard
By DON PERRY Record Sports Writer
After reeling off seven straight wins before finally losing in the title game of the McCreary Invitational, the Lady Raiders have fallen on tougher times.
The team ventured to Wayne County for a district match-up with the Lady Cardinals.
While the contest was tight almost throughout both sets, the Lady Cardinals handed McCreary Central it’s third loss of the season.
Wayne County won the first match 25-22, with the Lady Raiders playing right with the Lady Cardinals.
In the second match, the Lady Cardinals jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before McCreary Central came right back to tie things up at 4-4. From that point on, it was a tight match until Wayne County pulled away at the end to win 25-19.
“There were some negatives at Wayne County that we can turn into positives,” said coach Rob Jones. “We’ve just got to make those improvements throughout the season for the run in October.”
The Lady Raiders followed the district loss with another road trip, this time to Stanford to face regional rival Garrard County.
After dropping the first match 25-23, the Lady Raiders bounced back to top the Lady Lions 25-22 to set up a third match. It marked only the second time this season that the Lady Raiders have been forced to a third set. Both times resulted in losses.
In the third match, Garrard County took it to McCreary Central down the stretch, taking a 25-15 win.
The losses to Wayne and Garrard counties drop the Lady Raiders record to 9-4 on the season.
The Lady Raiders have to hit the road to battle another district foe this week as they head to Russell County on Thursday night.
The Lady Lakers usually have a strong program, but have struggled a bit so far this season and sit with a 3-8 record heading into the match-up with McCreary Central.
Following that game, the Lady Raiders will be back in tournament action at Metcalfe County over the weekend.
McCreary Central is slated to see four teams in pool play on Friday night and Saturday before seeding in the tournament begins in the Hornet Nest Fest. The Lady Raiders are set to face LaRue County, Glasgow, host Metcalfe County and Adair County to open the invitational tournament.
Following that tournament, the Lady Raiders get to head back to the county for a much deserved homestand.
McCreary will then play host to its next five opponents on the schedule beginning with Somerset on Sept. 9. The homestand will also includes games against Jellico, Monticello, Russell County, and a rematch with Wayne County.
After the five-game homestand, the Lady Raiders will have six games left on their regular season schedule which ends with Senior Night festivities on Oct. 9 when the team hosts North Laurel.
