Bomb threat at McCreary Hardwoods

Facility back to work at press time

PINE KNOT —  At press time, local law enforcement officers are investigating a reported bomb threat  at a local sawmill.

McCreary County Sheriff’s Detective David Sampson told The Record that he was advised of the situation just before 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The owner of McCreary County Hardwoods, a lumber processing facility located on Southern Highway (old US 27) in Pine Knot, reported the bomb threat to McCreary 911 at approximately 6:52 a.m.

According to Detective Sampson,  three employees of McCreary County Hardwood received text messages  beginning at approximately 5:47 a.m. that the mill would be blown up that morning.

“There were other texts stating ‘This ain’t a joke,’” Sampson said.

The property was placed on lockdown as authorities worked to secure the site. A bomb-sniffing dog  from the Kentucky State Police Post at Dry Ridge was brought in to clear each of the five buildings  on the property — two of which are completely enclosed.

At press time (around noon), no explosive devices had been found and employees given the okay to return to work.

Neither suspects nor motive were readily apparent this early into the investigation. Detective Sampson expressed initial concern due to the fact that emergency personnel had responded to a total of five fires overnight but again noted no immediate connection.

Detective David Sampson is leading the ongoing investigation and was assisted on scene by Sheriff Gus Skinner, KSP Detective Billy Correll, Trooper Craig Reed as well as the K-9 unit and Vehicle Enforcement.
