PINE KNOT —
USP McCreary remains on lockdown following an altercation last week which resulted in an inmate’s death.
According to a press release from Beverly Barron, the penitentiary’s Public Information Officer, the fight broke out in a housing unit the morning of May 5 and involved several inmates. Though staff were quickly able to contain the situation, one inmate was transported to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The inmate, who had not been identified as of press time, was subsequently pronounced dead at 8:14 a.m. last Monday morning.
No staff members were injured though several inmates sustained minor injuries.
Barron further stated that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified of the incident, which is currently under investigation.
Mary Troutman, the FBI’s Kentucky media specialist, could release no further details.
The institution was placed on lockdown with visitation canceled until further notice.
As of Friday, that status had not changed. Efforts to contact USP McCreary officials this week were not successful.
