Pioneer Community Hospital opens

McCreary EMS resumes transports to Scott facility

WHITLEY CITY —  Along with recent 911 developments, McCreary County 911/EMS Director Jimmy Barnett has cause to celebrate this week with the reopening of the hospital facility in Oneida.

Pioneer Community Hospital of Scott officially opened Monday morning at 8 a.m.

The former Scott County Hospital, which closed in May 2012 after its former operators declined to extend their lease, is the facility closest to most McCreary County residents. Since it had closed, most transports were taken either to Somerset or Corbin.

“From Pine Knot it’s a 12-mile trip and from Whitley City, it’s 20,” Barnett said. “It should cut our mileage in half, saving fuel and run time.”

That’s good news for the ambulance fleet. Barnett noted that the department’s newest truck has already logged some 4,000 miles in its first month.

Pioneer currently offers 24-hour emergency care, in-house diagnostic testing and laboratory services.

More than a dozen patients were reportedly seen the first day.
