Lady Raiders come up short in district upset bid

SOMERSET — The Lady Raider basketball team fell 48-40  in the opening round of the 48th District Tournament on Monday to Wayne County.

After leading 12-10 after the first quarter and by as much as 19-14 in the second quarter McCreary would fall behind as the Lady Cardinals scored the final nine points of the first half to take a 23-19 lead.

In the third quarter the Lady Raiders turned the ball over four times in the first three minutes and Wayne County extended the lead to 28-19 before McCreary scored for the first time in the half at the 3:49 mark.

McCreary would close out the third quarter with four straight points to trim the lead to five at 33-28 and then they opened the fourth with a basket to cut the lead to three.

The Lady Raider offense would go cold though scoring only a single point over the next six minutes.  Wayne would use that drought to extend their lead again, this time to 43-31 with just over a minute to go.

McCreary would manage to cut into the lead in the final minute but the Lady Cardinals would hit three of six free throws to go along  with a lay up after beating the Lady Raider press which allowed them  to maintain a comfortable lead on the way to the win.

Kaylee Cotton led McCreary with 22 points and Cierra Terry added 10.  The Lady Raiders season came to an end with a 6-21 record.
