McCreary native dies 1 week after head injury

WHITLEY CITY —  Emergency responders from more than 15 agencies escorted LaDonna Gibson Hurd back home to McCreary County Friday afternoon.

The 37-year-old volunteer firefighter, home health nurse, and single mother passed away around 5 p.m. last Wednesday evening at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, exactly one week after she fell while roller skating with her three children at Skater’s Paradise in Somerset.

Hurd hit her head in the fall, but no one thought she  was seriously injured. Still an ambulance was called because she was bleeding.

Doctors at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital stabilized Hurd, who was then flown to UK. According to information posted with the “Prayers for LaDonna” Facebook group (which at press time had 2,708 members), Hurd suffered brain hemorrhages and other injuries in the fall and was placed in a medically-induced coma while UK doctors tried to get the pressure in her skull under control.

But a full recovery was not to be. On Friday, some 15 fire departments as well as other emergency responders participa-ted in an escort bringing Hurd’s body to the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home in Whitley City.

A 1994 graduate of McCreary Central High School, Hurd lived in Bronston with her three children — a 19-year-old daughter, 16-year-old son and 18-year-old foster daughter. She worked as a home health nurse and volunteered with both the Bronston and Burnside fire departments.

For someone who gave so much to help others, the community has rallied around Hurd and now her family.

On May 3, the Burnside Fire Department is hosting a series of fundraisers. A $5-per-plate hot dog lunch begins at 11 a.m. with the “Helmets for Hurd” motorcycle ride  kicking off at noon. The fee is $20 per motorcycle.

Robert Mounce, who served with Hurd at the Bronston Volunteer Fire Department for more than a year, said that Hurd’s family asked that all riders be required to wear helmets due to the nature of her injury.

The ride will be followed by a baked goods auction.

Meanwhile, Ferguson fire-fighter Heather McClendon has spearheaded a “Team LaDonna” T-shirt fundraiser. They can be ordered through the “Prayers for LaDonna” page or by emailing mcclendonheather88@gmail.com.

All proceeds from the fundraisers will go to Hurd’s family.

“It will go to however they (Hurd’s family) see fit,” said Mounce.

A fund for Hurd and her family has also been set up at Citizens National Bank.

Funeral services were held yesterday with burial following at the Warman-Bryant Cemetery. Complete obituary information for LaDonna Hurd will be published in next week’s edition.
