New KIDS COUNT County Rankings released

McCreary is 112 out of 120 counties

JEFFERSONTOWN —  The 2013 KIDS COUNT County Data Book released on December 10 by Kentucky Youth Advocates highlights the need for smart investments to ensure kids in all counties have the best opportunity to thrive in childhood and succeed as adults.

This year's book ranks Kentucky counties on overall child well-being and on four domains critical to that well-being: economic security, education, health, and family/community strength. Each domain includes four indicators of well-being, for a total of 16 indicators.

Oldham County scored the highest overall child well-being ranking while Clay showed the most room for improvement. McCreary County ranks near the bottom of the spectrum at 112 of 120 counties.

More than one in four children in Kentucky lived in poverty in 2012, compared to 42 percent locally.

McCreary County ranked as follows in each domain -- economic security (108), health (103), education (79), and family/ community strength (119).

The 2013 Kentucky KIDS COUNT County Data Book was sponsored by Kosair Charities, Passport Health Plan, and Kentucky Beverage Association. The data from this year's book including the rankings, as well as new and historical data for the many other indicators Kentucky Youth Advocates tracks can be found at the KIDS COUNT Data Center at http://datacenter.kidscount.org/ky.
